I had an errand to run over west of duh Loop, in Logan Square, this morning;  and as I do when I’m in the old industrial areas of Chicago, I turned down a few alleys looking for interesting stuff.  Little did I know that today would turn into a Street Art day for Matt.

As you may know, I’m a big fan of the medium.  I always feel like I’ve found a hidden treasure when I come upon an engaging painting or illustration, seemingly random in placement and there for all to appreciate.  Well, today’s find is a doozy.

You can imagine my excitement when, turning off of W. Hubbard onto an unnamed side road, I came upon a masterpiece.  Created solely with cans of black spray paint, these two decaying Rams are the work of internationally renowned street artist ROA.  Although ROA calls Belgium his home, the artist’s work can be found on structures in London, Paris, NYC, Warsaw, Berlin… and now Chicago!  After doing a bit of googling, I discovered that this mural, unlike some street art, is not a random happening at all.

The building here is the studio of Hedrich Blessing  Photographers.  According to a blog posting by Tom Harris, a photographer at the studio, the company actually flew ROA to Chicago, and gave him carte blanche to create anything imaginable on the side wall of their studio building.  Tom noted, “We appreciate a fine piece of street art as much as the next guy but between the poorly sprayed on names of taggers and the city battling them with coat after coat of brown paint… it was time for action.”  Thanks for taking action guys.  You’ve added another jewel to Chicago’s crown.

400 N. Peoria Street

If you’re going to be in the area, make sure to check out the murals along the railroad embankment on Hubbard Street.
